Zen-inspired, straight-edged simplicity governs at Toteme's modern shelter, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, in China
The Toteme Beijing Flagship Store, a remarkable collaboration between the fashion brand and the renowned Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, has opened its doors in the heart of China's capital. This project marks Toteme's first architectural collaboration and a significant milestone, as it's also the brand's first store in China.
Herzog & de Meuron, winners of the prestigious Pritzker Prize, brought their contextual and culturally sensitive approach to the table, blending Toteme's minimalist and geometric design ethos with a bold interpretation of proportions. The result is a monochromatic space that enhances the interplay of volumes and textures, creating a sophisticated modernity while paying homage to Chinese heritage.
A key architectural feature is a sculptural, lacquered steel zigzagged staircase that acts as a central visual and spatial element. This stunning piece seamlessly integrates the brand’s identity with refined cultural references. The space's heart features Gonshi (natural stones) from a traditional Chinese garden, further emphasizing the harmony between nature, art, and commerce.
The collaboration was inspired by the desire to create something unique, using architecture and space to communicate Toteme's aesthetic values. Lindman, from Toteme, expresses enthusiasm about the collaboration and its results, stating that it was a pleasure to work with Herzog & de Meuron and that the resulting store offers an immersive, evocative experience.
The Toteme Beijing Flagship Store showcases the brand's spring/summer 2025 collection, including ready-to-wear, shoes, small leather goods, accessories, jewellery, and bags. The 'Bevel' bag, available in three exclusive colorways, is also on offer at the store.
The redesign includes 'chiselling' white stone to create a sculptural, pleated effect, and the floor has a high-gloss black lacquer wood texture. The space uses cool metal and a monochromatic palette for dynamic compositions, making it an unusual retail space that stands out as a significant cultural and architectural landmark for the brand.
This project was made possible by the organic idea exchange between the two teams, with Herzog & de Meuron being considered ideal partners to push the boundaries of Toteme's visual language. The Toteme Beijing Flagship Store is more than just a retail space; it's a spatial narrative that reflects both the brand’s identity and local cultural inspiration.
