Diving into the New Year: Nauthólsvík's Fancy-Dress Swim
Year-End Dip Sets the Mood for the Upcoming Year
Welcome the New Year with a daring splash at Nauthólsvík, where more than a hundred brave souls took the chilly plunge on New Year's Eve.
"It'd been a while since we last gathered for a New Year's Day dip in the sea back in 2020," says Herdís Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, the chairperson of SJÓR, the Reykjavík Sea Swimming Association.
Unlike the typical winter swims that are part of Iceland's famous wellness rituals, the New Year's Day swim is more about dress-up than diving in. Participants deck themselves out in their fanciest attire, with many groups donning themed outfits to ring in the new year. Herdís Anna herself stepped into the sea in a glittering sequined gown.
This year, the frigid waters and thick, icy coverings made for a unique experience. Þorvaldsdóttir shares, "The record cold temperatures and the unusual thickness of the ice over the water added a touch of the extraordinary to this year's swim."
While the subzero temperatures may have given some pause, the pull of the New Year's tradition held firm. "Despite the chill, there's something exhilarating about challenging the elements and starting off the year in a memorable way," Þorvaldsdóttir adds.
