Yakutsk hosts retiree retreat during summer season

In the heart of Yakutia, the Sakha Republic of Russia, a unique summer camp is underway, bringing together seniors from various districts and the city of Yakutsk. The "Silver Holidays" camp, organised by the Ministry of Labor and Social Development of Yakutia and the "School of the Third Age," offers a week-long programme aimed at promoting the health and well-being of the elderly.

The camp, themed "The Power of Tuimaada," incorporates elements of Yakutia's traditional cultural festival, celebrating the strength and resilience of the local people. This theme is reflected in the camp's activities, which include physical activities inspired by traditional Yakut sports and movement, cultural engagement, and social interaction.

Varvara Nikolaevna Sizonova, a 58-year-old participant from the Middle Kolyma District, travelled specifically to Yakutsk to join the camp. She participates enthusiastically in dancing, yoga, fitness, and archery, hoping to relax, share her experiences, meet new people, and learn something new.

The camp, taking place at the cadet school-internate, is open to seniors aged 55 to 91, representing a diverse range of professions and interests. The organisers believe that communication is crucial for the elderly, as it can help slow down the effects of aging.

The camp's programme is packed with activities, including acquaintance training, excursions, thematic days dedicated to the USSR and talent day, sports competitions, a health day, and a friendship day. The "Power of Tuimaada" shift will end on August 3.

Such camps, set against Yakutsk's harsh climate and remote location, offer a practical and culturally meaningful way to support senior health. By incorporating indigenous knowledge and healing practices, these camps aim to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being among the elderly.
