Wine consumption in the local area is persistently decreasing
Germany's Baden-Württemberg Wine Industry Tackles Decline with Comprehensive Measures
The German government, along with the Baden Winegrowing Association and the Württemberg Winegrowing Association, have joined forces to revitalize the popularity of German wine, particularly Baden-Württemberg wines. This collaborative effort was announced following the Cabinet's decision on January 14, 2025, to implement the "Immediate Program for Viticulture in Baden-Württemberg."
The program, which includes comprehensive measures for Baden and Württemberg wines, has been in development since project sketches were submitted in November 2024. While a precise date for a joint concept development meeting has yet to be specified, intensive discussions between the Minister and the winegrowing associations are scheduled to take place after the grape harvest.
The decline in wine consumption in Germany and Baden-Württemberg is not due to quality issues, but rather a shift in consumer preferences. The focus of the joint concept is on developing a comprehensive solution with no taboos, involving everyone to find a way forward.
The concept will require various measures, including a new marketing strategy, and is expected to be developed by spring 2026. The Minister, the two presidents of the winegrowing associations, and the winemakers stand united in their efforts to promote Baden and Württemberg wines, emphasizing the need to act quickly.
Rainer Zeller, President of the Baden Winegrowing Association, is confident that a solution will be found that moves them forward, helps regain market share, and creates added value for winemakers. The Württemberg Winegrowing Association e.V. is also supportive of the ministry's initiative and the Minister's commitment to Baden-Württemberg wine.
The Minister has agreed to a parafiscal levy for wine advertising to help regain market share, but it is not feasible in the short term. The final financing of the concept will be discussed together in the upcoming meetings.
Through viticulture, the local wine industry is strengthened, and the cultural landscape is preserved. The excellence of the wines from Baden and Württemberg is highlighted as a key aspect that needs to be promoted together. The joint concept for promoting Baden and Württemberg wines is expected to make them a bestseller.
Currently, only about 40% of the wine consumed in Germany is from Germany. With the collaborative efforts of the government and the winegrowing associations, this statistic is expected to change, bringing renewed success to the Baden-Württemberg wine industry.
