Wilhelm Raabe Literature Award Recognition
The Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize, one of the most highly endowed contemporary literature awards in Germany, is an annual event donated by the city of Braunschweig and Deutschlandradio/Deutschlandfunk. Established in 1944 in memory of Wilhelm Raabe, a poet who lived in Braunschweig from 1870 until his death, the prize has been a beacon of recognition for outstanding individual works of German-language literature.
Originally awarded under the name "Wilhelm Raabe Prize" until 1990, the prize was redesigned in 2000 by the city of Braunschweig and Deutschlandradio/Deutschlandfunk. The redesigned prize honors outstanding individual works of German-language literature every two years, with the exception of debut works.
The selection process for the prize is carried out by a 9-member expert jury appointed by the city of Braunschweig and Deutschlandradio/Deutschlandfunk. The jury carefully reviews submissions to select the most deserving work. Self-application for the prize is not possible.
The prize money is €30,000, awarded annually since 2009. The prize is given for a contemporary novel written in German. The Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize is presented in November each year.
