White-capped cockatoo is the avian companion found within the premises of the local bird park.
In the heart of Solingen Bird and Animal Park, two extraordinary birds, Lady Gaga and Olli, have captured the attention of visitors and staff alike. Olli, a 30-year-old Cockatiel, and Lady Gaga, his five-year-younger companion, have formed an unusual yet heartwarming bond.
Olli, known for his clown-like antics, is a favourite among visitors for his entertaining behaviour. However, his affections are reserved for Lady Gaga, whom he shows great affection towards. Their bond, which began from the start, has only been strengthened over time, with the exception of one instance where Olli displayed aggression and bit off a large part of another Cockatiel's upper beak.
Lady Gaga, on the other hand, is popular with visitors and shares a special bond with Olli. She and Carlo, another Cockatiel, live together in their own aviary. Carlo, who was raised as an only child, has never learned to interact with other birds, but he and Lady Gaga share a strong bond.
Kakadus, the species to which Olli and Lady Gaga belong, are not social birds and should be kept in pairs. These parrots, predominantly white in colour, with yellowish undersides of wings and inner sides of tail feathers, have a strong beak that serves as a tool and can be a real weapon. They are easily recognisable by the white feather crest on top of their head, which they can raise according to their mood.
Interestingly, Kakadus, named after the Malay word 'kakatua' which means 'beak, beak nippers', enjoy being stroked and cuddled. However, if they don't receive enough attention, they let out a characteristic, truly ear-piercing screech. If left alone, they need constant human care to be tame and affectionate.
In the wild, white-crested kakadus are very rare and are listed as endangered on the Red List of threatened species. It is vital that these birds continue to be cared for and protected in captivity, such as in the care of Janett Heinrich, the ltd. animal keeper at Solingen Bird and Animal Park, who Kakadus like Carlo show great affection towards.
Meanwhile, at Tierpark Hellabrunn in Munich, another Cockatiel named Judy lives, handicapped due to a previous partner biting off part of her lower beak. Despite this, she and Carlo make a dream couple and live together in their own aviary.
In an effort to find a suitable match for Olli, a female bird was found in Berlin. She was of a certain age and could stand up to him, making her an ideal companion for the feisty Olli.
Despite their unique personalities and quirks, Olli and Lady Gaga's bond serves as a reminder of the complex emotions and relationships that exist within the animal kingdom. Their story is a testament to the power of companionship and the importance of care and attention in the lives of these remarkable creatures.
