In response to anticipated heavy rainfall and prolonged dry spells due to climate change, experts in Thuringia advise garden owners to adopt rainwater usage solutions. Kerstin Beckert, managing director of the Thuringian state association of the German Society for Garden Art and Landscape Culture (DGGL), suggests options ranging from rain barrels to ponds and cisterns tailored to local possibilities.
Starting this Sunday (25th of May), the "Open Gardens" event organized by the DGGL state association and the state association of the Federal Association of German Landscape Architects will once again showcase the variety of private gardens across Thuringia that are not usually open to the public. Approximately 22 gardens in Bad Blankenburg, Rudolstadt, Saalfeld, Erfurt, and its surrounding area will participate, with additional dates in various cities and regions through the 29th of June in Bad Langensalza and the surrounding area.
To gain entry and a list of the participating gardens in each region for a small fee, visitors may access entrance gardens and obtain an entrance stamp. Gardens are typically open from 10:00 to 17:00 on action days.
Apart from "Open Gardens," this weekend offers another exciting opportunity for green oasis enthusiasts: the Garden Festival at Schloss Kochberg takes place on Saturday, the 24th of May. Visitors may stroll through a garden market, visit the castle museum, and the theater against payment of an entrance fee.
