Water Safety Reminders for Residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky
In the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, water safety is a top priority, especially during the summer months. Starting June 1, 2022, the city will initiate a preventive action aimed at promoting water safety and reducing accidents.
The main objective of this action is to ensure the safe use of small craft and the safety of citizens near water bodies. This includes organized recreation areas and traditionally used zones. Citizens are advised to swim and sunbathe only on equipped beaches and to teach children water safety rules.
Warning signs have been installed on the shores of Kultuchnoye and Medvezhye lakes, with swimming in these lakes prohibited due to unsanitary conditions. It is also important to note that swimming beyond buoys or far from the shore, jumping from the shore into unfamiliar places, swimming while intoxicated, diving under each other, grabbing legs, pushing or pulling non-swimmers into deep water are all strictly forbidden.
For the safety of all, it is essential to rest on your back in the water if you feel tired and to avoid staying in the water for more than 15-20 minutes to prevent hypothermia and cramps. In case of an emergency, call the emergency services on 101, 102, 103, or the unified number 112.
In addition to these measures, special focus will be given to recreation areas at Sinichkinskoe, Oval'noye, Bezimyannoye, Ozerovaya spit, Bol'shaya and Malaya lager'naya lakes, as well as the Khalaktyrsky beach.
While Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is known for its tsunami risk, the water safety measures in place are not limited to tsunami management. Evacuations and preparedness are key components of the city's response to seismic events. Local authorities swiftly issue tsunami warnings and evacuate residents from dangerous coastal areas to higher ground.
In the event of a tsunami warning, people are advised to stay away from oceans, rivers, and other bodies of water to avoid dangerous currents and waves. Residents and visitors are instructed to remain cautious of aftershocks and further waves, following evacuation routes and emergency orders from regional authorities.
The State Inspectorate for Small Craft of the EMERCOM of Russia for the Kamchatka Territory, the municipal district administration, and the police will collaborate on this action, ensuring the safety of all citizens and visitors in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The water safety action will continue until October 1, 2025, in an enhanced mode.
