Vessel 'Providence' Sails In for 2019

The Tall Ship Providence, a full-scale replica of a 1700s ship, is set to make Old Town Alexandria its new home port. This 12-gun, 110-foot "Sloop of War" was commissioned by the Brown family in 1976 for the United States Bicentennial Celebration, serving as a replica of the Continental Navy's first warship.

The Tall Ship Providence Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, acquired the vessel and is currently focusing on fundraising for its restoration. The Foundation's mission is to promote maritime, naval, and American Revolutionary War history in Alexandria, Virginia, and the Chesapeake Bay region.

The Providence, upon arriving in Old Town Alexandria, will serve as the Foundation's new home port. The original Providence, built by the Brown family in the late 1700s, also became the U.S. Navy's first warship. However, the original Providence was deliberately sunk in 1779 to prevent it from being captured by the British.

Once restored, the Providence will serve as a floating classroom, educating the public about maritime, naval, and American Revolutionary War history. The Foundation plans to host tours, chartered cruises, and historical education events once the Providence is in Old Town Alexandria. The arrival of the Providence is expected in the early summer of 2019.

Despite extensive research, there are no relevant search results indicating who founded the Tall Ship Providence Foundation or details about the restoration and docking of the ship in Alexandria. Nonetheless, the arrival of the Providence promises to be a significant addition to Old Town Alexandria's rich maritime history.
