Urbana Cub Scouts' First Pinewood Derby Workshop Empowers Kids to Build Cars

Pack 402 in Urbana, Ill., recently held its first Pinewood Derby workshop, with an impressive 90% attendance. Cubmaster Tori Exum initiated this event to assist parents, especially those living in apartments or single parents, who might struggle with creating a Pinewood Derby car from scratch.

The workshop, held in Cubmaster Exum's garage, followed an assembly-line approach. It began with Cubmaster David McRae, who has been organizing such workshops annually for three years, guiding the Scouts through the initial steps. Some Scouts left with completed cars, while others received assistance and finished their projects later. Pack and community volunteers were on hand to help with every stage of the process.

The workshop aimed to reduce the number of 'dad-built' cars in the pack's derby by empowering Scouts to understand and engage with the car-building process. While Scouts could add wheels to their cars at the workshop, they were advised against doing so to prevent potential race-day issues.

The Pinewood Derby workshop in Urbana, Ill., provided an invaluable opportunity for young people to learn a new skill and gain confidence. By donating to Scouting, such extraordinary opportunities become possible, allowing young people to embrace their true potential.
