Urban transformation rejuvenates Bucharest's landscape with an eye-catching coffee shop nestled within a small city gap.

In the heart of Bucharest, on Bazilescu Street, a forgotten gap has been transformed into something extraordinary by Vinklu, a renowned architectural firm. The Chapel, as it's now known, is a testament to the power of creative design and innovative strategies that breathe new life into seemingly unusable urban spaces.

The Chapel, a glass and timber insertion wedged between existing buildings, defies its narrow base with a sharp, acute apex, creating a sculptural, soaring volume that pushes upward and defies expectations. The triangular prism shape maximizes height while occupying a minimal footprint, turning a leftover urban void into a striking, functional coffee shop.

The structure's transparency, achieved through triple-glazed, low-emissivity glass walls, dissolves the boundary between interior and street. This transparency invites natural light from multiple angles, filling the interior with dynamic light patterns and making the small space feel airy and connected to the surroundings. Contrasting with the glass and steel exterior, warm timber cladding inside adds softness and intimacy, further enhancing the space’s welcoming atmosphere.

During the day, The Chapel appears almost dematerialized, blending into the street scene with reflective glass. At night, interior lighting transforms it into a glowing lantern-like beacon, adding a sculptural, urban landmark character that animates the streetscape.

The strategic use of seating caters to different user needs and time of day. Quick counter service near the street is ideal for morning commuters, while quieter, intimate corners are perfect for afternoon visitors. The prefabricated lightweight steel structure supports the unusual geometry with minimal clutter, creating an uninterrupted, soaring ceiling that enhances the sense of vertical spaciousness.

The Chapel's floor treatment transitions seamlessly from interior to exterior, further blurring the boundaries between coffee shop and street. Raw timber beams are exposed, celebrating the structural gymnastics required to span the unusual site. The project takes something completely ordinary and makes it worth seeking out, with distinct zones within the single space creating organic meeting points and conversation areas.

Natural light pours through The Chapel, bouncing off warm timber surfaces and creating ever-changing shadow patterns. The Chapel has distinct zones within the single space, creating organic meeting points and conversation areas. This isn't Vinklu's first collaboration with Boiler Coffee around Bucharest. Their Globalworth Square location, Boiler SQ, draws from Spanish market halls. Each project feels tailored to its site while still feeling like part of the same family.

By turning a seemingly unusable leftover sliver into a purposeful architectural object, Vinklu demonstrates how small interventions with precision and creativity can significantly improve urban experience. The Chapel is an example of smart urban ingenuity — a micro building imbued with life and personality, turning constraints into defining virtues without requiring a large footprint or budget.

The Chapel, with its seamless blend of coffee shop and street, perfectly embodies a fusion of events, lifestyle, and home-and-garden, as it redefines urban spaces and offers a unique venue for social gatherings and leisure activities. The warm timber interior creates a cozy atmosphere that transcends typical coffee shop designs, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
