Urban Development: Introducing a Novel Urban Center
In the heart of Düsseldorf, Germany, a series of exciting renovation and expansion projects are underway at the Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz. The centrepiece of these changes is the upcoming Kö-Bogen II project, a new development consisting of three buildings that will be fully framed, along with the Schauspielhaus.
The Schadowstraße, running between Berliner Allee and Bleichstraße, is being completely renewed. This revitalisation includes a division of the east-west connection parallel to the planning for the eastern part of Schadowstraße. The Schadowstraße west of Bleichstraße serves as a transition that mediates between the designs "Ko-Bogen" and "Schadowstraße."
Within the third construction phase, new pedestrian paths will be created in both north-south and west-east directions. The wide pedestrian paths in the Ko-Bogen paving will be maintained, and a lane for vehicles will run alongside the pedestrian path, distinguished by a darker surface material. The largest part of Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz will be dedicated to pedestrians.
A significant addition to the plaza will be the installation of a fountain field, which is currently in progress. The fountain nozzles will be flush with the plaza surface to maintain usability. Once completed, the fountain field will serve as the central element of the plaza, and the fountains can be illuminated in different colours for an added visual appeal.
To accommodate visitors, a tree island will be created at the eastern edge of the Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz, featuring potential seating areas. The plaza lighting will be designed similarly to Kö-Bogen I, with adapted light columns, swivelable individual spotlights, and bollards for separating the roadway from the plaza surface. Some bollards will have integrated LED strips for mood lighting.
Access to the Dreischeibenhaus will be laid out at the edge and north of the eastern building body of the Ingenhoven-Tal, which will emerge as the main access point to the Gustaf-Gruündgens-Platz, the Schauspielhaus, and the Dreischeibenhaus.
In addition, a bike and pedestrian path is being constructed along the Rhine Railway track. To ensure accessibility for all, a guidance system for visually impaired people will be implemented according to legal requirements.
As part of the underground garage construction for Kö-Bogen II, the Schauspielhaus will be reconnected to the existing underground connecting structure. Coordination is required due to simultaneous works on Kö-Bogen II and the Schauspielhaus.
The interim plaza surface is being gradually installed for the new construction, and the paved areas in front of Ko-Bogen II are almost complete, with the asphalted area to be finalized after the completion of construction works by mid-year. A light top layer is expected to be applied this summer.
While specific details regarding the current status and schedule for the completion of these projects are not readily available, checking local Düsseldorf municipal websites, construction authority portals, or recent local news outlets would be advisable for the most up-to-date information. The inauguration of the fountain can only take place after the completion of the plaza surface.
These transformative projects promise to revitalise Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz, creating a vibrant and accessible public space for the enjoyment of all Düsseldorf residents and visitors.
