In Unterallgäu, Germany, a local pig farm is currently under investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office in Memmingen, following allegations of animal welfare violations. The case was brought to light by the animal rights organization "Soko Tierschutz" through secret recordings and shocking images of dirty stalls and sick and injured animals, which were published on their website.

The Control Authority for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (KBLV) has taken action, issuing both oral and written orders to ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations. According to reports, these orders followed deficiencies identified during a first regular inspection in February 2025, which included structural issues. The operator of the pig farm, which houses around 3,000 pigs, has been implementing the measures within the specified deadlines and on an ongoing basis.

The farm, which consists of three pig farms that were combined into one last year and includes a biogas plant, is also addressing the requirements set by the KBLV to improve animal welfare. Deficiencies identified during the inspection, such as the alleged case of a lame animal neither being treated nor euthanized, are reportedly being addressed.

However, the operator declined to comment on the allegations when contacted by the German Press Agency. The Public Prosecutor's Office in Memmingen is currently investigating the case, but no details about the allegations have been disclosed yet.

The KBLV's oral orders on the spot during the inspection were followed by a legally binding written order. The deficiencies identified during the first regular inspection in February 2025, including structural issues, have been rectified by the operator.

The investigation is ongoing, and it remains to be seen what the outcome will be. The public and animal rights organizations will be closely watching this case to ensure that the welfare of the animals at this farm is prioritized and improved.

EC countries could review their employment policies to prioritize staffing for animal welfare inspections, especially in home-and-garden sectors like pig farms. This could lead to a lifestyle change for inspectors, as they might need to spend more time on location to properly assess living conditions and enact necessary changes. Additionally, pet owners in Unterallgäu and beyond could also be encouraged to adopt a more responsible lifestyle when it comes to caring for their pets, adhering to the necessary animal welfare regulations, much like the pig farm operator is currently endeavoring to do.
