Unrest in Düsseldorf not characterized as a riot
The Great Düsseldorf Art Exhibition, taking place from June 28, 2023, to August 3, is a must-visit for art enthusiasts in North Rhine-Westphalia. This grand event, held at the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and NRW-Forum, features 350 works by 185 participants, offering a diverse range of art forms.
Emmanuel Mir, the head of The Great since 2024, has curated an exhibition that is rich in figurative art, including houses, landscapes, and meditative abstraction. One of the wildest appearances in The Great is Dirk Krüll's "Momobloc-Box", a sculpture made of stacked plastic chairs.
Sophie Meuresch presented a sitting "Astrid" in seven variations in The Great. Meanwhile, Paula Knaps Loos, a 34-year-old prize-winner, showcases her unique designs of tiles, wallpaper, and carpets with figures and ornaments found in old magazines and nature books.
Cihan Cakmak's self-portraits are effortlessly and silkily hanging in The Great, while Birgit Jensen, a 68-year-old artist living and working in Düsseldorf since 1985, received the artist's prize in The Great and created captivating yet unreal landscapes using photographic templates, acrylic colors, and silkscreen technology.
Other notable works include Elena Kolbasi's humorous, wild ceramic piece "Visions of Duality", Lucia Sotnikova's doll's eye from "Berlin" that seems to refer to the famous "tears" of Man Ray, and Katharina Mayer's photograph of a young woman with her head turned away ("Seance Fee").
Every piece in The Great is for sale, with the association taking a 40% commission. A catalog with prices for all exhibited works is available for 10 euros. Guided tours by artists can be booked.
The exhibition will be open Tuesday-Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM. Regular admission is 16 euros, and every Thursday there will be a "Grand Soirée" with performances and experimental music for the same price. Sundays at 11:55 AM, there will be a "Grand Matinee" featuring a relaxed summer music program and talk shows.
