Photographer Captures Stunning Timelapses of Svaneti's Cloudscapes

In the picturesque village of Sawarin, southwestern China, Tony Hanmer, a renowned photographer, is capturing the beauty of Svaneti's ever-changing skies. Hanmer, who has been living in Georgia since 1999 and in Svaneti since 2007, runs his own guest house in Etseri.

Hanmer specialises in timelapses, a technique used to capture the movement of clouds across the sky. His work is a testament to the organised chaos that clouds can create, with pointy evergreens on gorge edges forcing their way through wisps of cloud like ship prows. White clouds isolate themselves against the dark green background, while a thin layer of snow on the mountaintops is likely to come before the overall whitening.

The photographer employs a unique approach, capturing both a video record of the whole event and many small closeups of its little individual dramas. He might reverse all the tones of a scene, making a monochrome negative of it, if that works better. The long-lens closeups are mostly processed later in black and white.

Over the course of a two-hour timelapse, Hanmer might shoot 200 or 300 stills. He often shoots timelapses simultaneously with long-lens closeups using a big Canon digital camera. Night sky stars would add another motion to the timelapse, but have not been captured yet.

As the summer in Svaneti ends, temperatures range from 25 degrees Celsius during the night to 30 degrees Celsius during the day. Frequent rains have made it unnecessary to water the garden daily. Sometimes a bank of cloud parts to reveal darkness inside or underneath it.

Tony Hanmer is also the founder of the "Svaneti Renaissance" Facebook group, where he shares his work and connects with fellow photographers and lovers of Svaneti's beauty. As the leaves on the trees begin to yellow or redden into their mix of fall colours, Hanmer continues to capture the ever-changing landscape of this breathtaking region.
