Unexpected findings uncovered in study determining the most pet-friendly cities and states to rent within the U.S.

For pet owners planning a move, the search for a new home can be a challenging task. However, a recent Zillow analysis has provided valuable insights into the most pet-friendly cities and states in the United States, making the process a little easier.

Topping the list of pet-friendly cities is Austin, Texas, with an impressive 80% of rental listings welcoming pets. Austin is closely followed by Dallas, Texas, and San Antonio, Texas, which both allow pets in 79% and 78% of their rental properties, respectively. Texas leads the way with three cities in the top three spots, making it the most pet-friendly state overall.

However, it's worth noting that within the same state, the level of pet-friendliness can vary significantly. Houston, Texas, for instance, stands out as the least pet-friendly city, with only 38% of landlords allowing pets in their rental units.

The most pet-friendly cities in the US are not limited to Texas. Nashville, Tennessee, Denver, Colorado, Kansas City, Missouri, Charlotte, North Carolina, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Tampa, Florida, also feature prominently in the list.

On the other end of the spectrum, Hawaii is the least pet-friendly state, with only a third (33.2%) of rental listings being pet-friendly. Miami, Florida, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cleveland, Ohio, Buffalo, New York, Detroit, Michigan, San Jose, California, Providence, Rhode Island, Hartford, Connecticut, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, are among the least pet-friendly cities.

Interestingly, the most and least pet-friendly cities can differ substantially depending on the state. For example, Bakersfield, California, is one of the least pet-friendly cities, with only 39.5% of rental listings allowing pets, while Plano, another city in Texas, boasts a pet-friendly rate of 93.2%.

When it comes to cats, Minnesota emerges as the state with the highest percentage of pet-friendly listings, with 82.7%. Colorado and Washington rank second and third, respectively, after Minnesota. North Carolina is the third most pet-friendly state for cat owners, with 83.2% of rental listings being pet-friendly.

In summary, the data provides a useful guide for renters looking for pet-friendly options, as well as landlords considering the demand and faster rental turnover for pet-friendly properties in these markets. With almost three-quarters (73.2%) of rental listings in the US allowing small dogs, large dogs, or cats, it seems that pet ownership is becoming increasingly accepted in the rental market.

  1. For home-and-garden enthusiasts who own pets, Austin, Texas, might be an ideal choice, given that 80% of its rental listings welcome pets.
  2. Within the United States, Texas tops the list as the most pet-friendly state, with three cities among the top three pet-friendly cities, namely Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio.
  3. On the contrary, cities like Houston, Texas, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, stand out as the least pet-friendly cities, with only 38% and 33.2% of landlords allowing pets in their rental units, respectively.
