Understanding the significance of OEKO-TEX, European Flax, and GOTS certificates:

A growing number of consumers are prioritizing organic and non-toxic home textiles, and for good reason. Three key certifications - OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1, European Flax, and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) - collectively ensure safety, sustainability, and high-quality organic production standards for textile products, particularly duvet covers.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1

The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 certification guarantees that the fabric has been tested for over 350 harmful substances and is safe for sensitive skin, including babies. Class 1 is the most stringent level, making it ideal for products like duvet covers that come in close contact with skin. This certification ensures the fabric is free from harmful chemicals such as heavy metals, pesticides, and other toxins.

European Flax (Master of Flax Fibre)

The European Flax certification guarantees that the flax used is grown sustainably in Belgium and France without artificial irrigation or GMOs, relying on natural rainfall. It also involves eco-friendly processing without harsh chemicals, resulting in strong, soft linen that is better for both health and the environment. This certification underscores traceability back to its European agricultural origins.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)

GOTS certification ensures that the entire production chain, from organic farming of the flax to processing and manufacturing, adheres to strict organic, environmental, and socially responsible labor standards. This means the duvet cover is made from textiles that are organically grown without harmful chemicals and produced under ethical working conditions.

Together, these certifications mean a duvet cover is: - Safe for even the most sensitive skin (OEKO-TEX Class 1), - Made from high-quality linen from sustainably and transparently sourced European flax, - Produced under rigorous organic and ethical standards ensuring no toxic chemicals or unethical labor practices (GOTS).

While these certifications emphasize safety and sustainability, they do not directly guarantee tactile softness, which also depends on textile finishing and natural fiber characteristics.

Under GOTS, wet processing units must keep full records of chemical, energy, water consumption, and waste water treatment. The waste water from all wet processing units under GOTS must be treated in a functional waste water treatment plant. Bleaches must be based on oxygen (no chlorine bleaching) under GOTS. Discharge printing methods using aromatic solvents and plastisol printing methods using phthalates and PVC are prohibited under GOTS.

GOTS sets stringent environmental and social criteria throughout the entire organic textiles supply chain, including social criteria such as employment being freely chosen, respect for freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, safe and hygienic working conditions, prohibition of child labor, provision of living wages, regulation of working hours, prohibition of discrimination, provision of regular employment, and prohibition of harsh or inhumane treatment.

Packaging material under GOTS must not contain PVC. Paper or cardboard used in packaging material must be recycled or certified according to FSC or PEFC.

The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® tests every element of the finished product, including accessory parts. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 certificate guarantees that the duvet is free of harmful chemicals.

While these certifications do not guarantee tactile softness, they do ensure that the duvet covers are made from high-quality organic materials, produced using eco-friendly processes, and manufactured under ethical working conditions. This guarantees a safer, more sustainable, and healthier choice for consumers prioritizing organic and non-toxic home textiles.
