Study Identifies Biomarkers for Exceptional Longevity Among Swedish Centenarians

A significant study on the Swedish AMORIS cohort has shed light on common biomarkers associated with exceptional longevity, particularly in relation to liver and kidney function.

Researchers analysed data from over 44,000 Swedes aged 64 to 99, focusing on 12 blood-based biomarkers related to inflammation, metabolism, liver and kidney function, potential malnutrition, and anemia.

The study found that lower glucose, creatinine, and uric acid levels were key biomarkers linked to longer, healthier lives. Lower glucose levels in blood tests suggest better-controlled diabetes, which is beneficial for overall health as we age. Lower creatinine levels, indicating better kidney function, are also advantageous, as kidney health is crucial for maintaining a balanced metabolism. Lower uric acid levels in urine tests, which correlate with lower risk for cardiovascular disease, gout, and kidney stones, are also beneficial.

Additional lifestyle factors correlated with these biomarker profiles and longevity were noted, including not smoking or using nicotine products, higher mobility and physical activity, and moderate alcohol consumption, especially wine and beer. These factors differed from early deaths in the cohort.

The study followed participants over 35 years and tracked their biomarker levels to relate them to longevity outcomes, with 1,224 individuals achieving age 100 or more. Interestingly, 85 percent of the centenarians were female, and of these participants, 2.7 percent lived to be 100 years old.

While the study does not conclude which specific lifestyle factors or genes are responsible for the biomarker values, it suggests that maintaining a balanced diet and lifestyle choices can help maintain these biomarker levels. For example, reducing red meat, seafood, alcohol, and sugary sodas consumption may help lower uric acid levels, while almonds and the DASH diet can help reduce uric acid levels and maintain healthy creatinine levels. CoQ10 supplements may support metabolic health and insulin sensitivity, potentially contributing to lower glucose levels.

As the number of centenarians continues to grow, with the UN projecting there will be 3.7 million centenarians alive by 2050, understanding the factors contributing to exceptional longevity is increasingly important.
