On June 21st, the groundbreaking ceremony took place, marking the start of construction on this 2000 square meter property, which until then was just a gravel area. The city plans to plant trees, shrubs, and create a diverse meadow by fall and winter. A circular path, benches, and 129 trees, along with 160 large shrubs, are all part of the design drawn up by Danielzik Leuchter + Partner Landscape Architects, as depicted in a graphic provided by the City of Düsseldorf.
The story behind Albert Street is intriguing; the area was originally part of an allotment garden that made way for the U-Bahn construction in 1990. Afterwards, a car dealership used the property as a parking lot, sealing it with gravel and asphalt. This barren parking lot is about to become a lush green oasis next year.
Doris Törkel, head of the Garden, Cemetery, and Forestry Office, explains that the new trees will be planted in groups at three-meter intervals to create a forest feel. They'll also plant columnar, fast-growing trees as a screen on the southern border to create a sense of enclosure. Keep an eye out for this gem in the spring of 2024!

Jochen Kral, Environmental Director, says, "The pilot project on Albert Street sets a new standard in the state capital and creates an ecologically valuable place to relax in the urban space." Rainwater will be used on-site to water the trees, following the principle of a "sponge city". With a new sink box, sediment trap, and infiltration trough, water will seep into the ground instead of flowing into the sewer. The total costs for the project amount to around one million euros, mainly funded by the federal program "Adaptation of urban spaces to climate change".
