Transformation of a Kitchen: Past, Present, and a Renovation
==========================================================================
The kitchen of a typical home has undergone two transformations, with the latest update bringing a much-needed refresh to the 20-year-old Thermafoil cabinets. These cabinets, while durable, typically last between 10 to 20 years, and with the current ones being about two decades old, they were nearing the end of their lifespan.
For those considering a replacement, there are several options available, each with its own characteristics, durability, and maintenance requirements. Solid wood cabinets, for instance, offer a classic, sturdy design that can last decades with proper care. High-end laminate, on the other hand, boasts smooth surfaces and a wide color/design range, while being durable and resistant to moisture and heat.
Thermofoil cabinets, while improved, still have limitations when it comes to heat and moisture vulnerability. However, there are updated versions available that can last 10–20 years. Painted cabinets with multi-layer finishes offer a more industrial look, with a multi-step finishing process for superior durability and appearance. Custom cabinets with lifetime warranties are a high-end option, designed for lifetime use and backed by warranties.
The choice of replacement depends on priorities such as durability, aesthetics, and cost. For example, solid wood or cabinets with high-quality multi-layer finishes generally outlast thermofoil by a wide margin and resist daily kitchen wear better. High-end laminate cabinetry also offers a good balance of durability and style.
The original counters and cabinets were removed, and the kitchen layout was revamped to enlarge the island and provide counter seating. A large window above the kitchen sink was not installed in the new kitchen, but the cabinets were covered with Thermafoil, and the sink and dishwasher were moved from the peninsula to the new island. The cooktop is 36'' wide, and the hood measures 48'' wide.
The kitchen remodel was done by two people with zero experience in kitchen remodeling and design. Despite this, the project was completed after many weeks, with the kitchen being given a refresh with new countertops and updated accessories. A simple, beveled edge, subway tile was used for the backsplash, while a Carrera marble mosaic and Carrera pencil tile were used as a decorative tile inset above the cooktop.
The kitchen initially had a white colour, but it now boasts a more vibrant and inviting look. The counter beside the wall ovens serves as the coffee and hot beverage nook. The refrigerator was moved to the end of the kitchen and panels were added to give it a built-in look. The toaster and standing mixer were placed in a nook beside the fridge.
The kitchen also has a view of the windows in the breakfast area, which underwent a makeover. Two wall ovens and the microwave were added to the opposite side of the kitchen, beside the pantry. The cabinet above the wall oven looked scorched, but the Thermafoil on the cabinets had started to come loose in several places.
