Thriving After Initial Months: Montana Museum of Art and Culture Celebrates Successful Launch

The Montana Museum of Art and Culture (MMAC) has finally opened its doors to the public after moving into its new, state-of-the-art facility on the University of Montana campus. The new building, completed in September 2023, is a significant change from the old location, which was hidden away among the Dennison Theater in the PARTV building.

The MMAC's new home boasts a 350,000 square-foot space, providing advanced infrastructure that likely supports enhanced exhibition capabilities. Rafael Chacon, the museum's director, has stated that the response to the new building and the Permanent Collection has been positive.

Currently, the MMAC is displaying 400 pieces at a time from its nearly 12,000-object collection. The museum plans to rotate the selection of 400 objects over the next two years, ensuring that visitors have a fresh experience with the collection. According to Chacon, the museum has been promising a chance to see its remarkable collection for decades.

The ground floor of the new MMAC building will hold classroom space and provide collection access for educational outreach events. The museum has been hosting educational outreach for a long time, and Chacon mentioned that the new building will greatly improve these events.

The MMAC's increased attendance includes many students, as the museum is in the process of moving its collection from the PARTV building. According to Chacon, the museum will work to display the collection that has been hidden for decades.

The new MMAC building stands out on the University campus, and the museum is located next to the Adams Center. The official opening of the MMAC was on Sept. 28, and the museum has been open for nearly two months.

The MMAC's educational outreach events will look and feel much improved in the new building. The museum has been a staple of the University community and Montana's cultural scene for many years, and its new home promises to continue that tradition.

As the museum continues to move and catalog its extensive collection, more information about future exhibitions and rotations will be released. For now, visitors can enjoy the current display of 400 pieces from the MMAC's Permanent Collection.
