The Palatinate Region Claims Germany's Top Wine Honor, with Charlotte Weihl Turning 76.
The 76th German Wine Queen has been crowned, as Charlotte Weihs from the Pfalz took the title, succeeding Eva Brockmann. The election, held online this year, saw a total of 12 regional wine queens from 13 German wine-growing regions compete for the prestigious role.
The election gala, broadcasted live on SWR.de/weinkoenigin, saw the candidates prove their wine knowledge and public appearance skills through games and conversations. Julia Lambrich from Dellhofen near Oberwesel and Katharina Graeff from the Nahe were also appointed as the new German Wine Princesses.
However, the online voting process raised concerns about potential disadvantages for smaller wine-growing regions, such as Saxony, Saale-Unstrut, and Württemberg, due to their smaller fan bases compared to larger regions. This issue was emphasized by Eva Brockmann, who underlined the importance and timeliness of the Wine Queen role.
Despite these challenges, the election was a success, with the audience casting their votes to decide the outcome. The outgoing German Wine Princess, Jessica, also highlighted the importance of gender equality in wine leadership. She will be joined by Katharina Graeff and Julia Lambrich, who will continue to represent German wine for the coming year.
Next year, a man from Rheinhessen, Levin, is set to run for German Wine Queen for the first time. More photos from the election gala can be found on the SWR.de/weinkoenigin website, and for those who missed the livestream, it can be re-watched on the same platform.
The German Wine landscape is a blend of tradition, innovation, and the passion of winemakers. The new German Wine Queen, Charlotte Weihs, and the two new Wine Princesses, Julia Lambrich and Katharina Graeff, will work together to promote this rich and diverse wine culture.
