Tesla Introduces Innovative Supercharger Feature to Improve Charging Efficiency in Cold Climates
In a significant move, Tesla, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced the activation of a new Supercharger feature designed to enhance charging efficiency in cold climates. This feature is currently available at Tesla's V3 and V4 Superchargers.
Max de Zegher, Tesla's Director of Charging, discussed the new Supercharger feature in detail. The innovative technology sends an AC ripple current through the battery to aid in warming it up, ensuring Model 3 and Model Y vehicles can get back on the road faster in cold conditions.
This pre-heating of batteries is a strategic move aimed at improving charging efficiency in extreme cold weather. It is specifically designed for Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with standard range, rear-wheel drive configurations.
Tesla's new Supercharger feature is a result of their vertical integration and the hard work of their engineers. The company joins Peugeot, who has also introduced a similar function to improve charging times for their cars in extreme cold. However, Peugeot's feature will only be activated in certain climate zones starting in autumn 2025 when ordering becomes possible.
The advice for Tesla owners is to always precondition before Supercharging for the fastest charging. This can be done automatically by selecting a Supercharger as the destination. While the new Supercharger feature warms the battery, it does not solely rely on this method. Tesla still recommends preconditioning the battery before arriving at a Supercharger.
The new Supercharger feature is expected to significantly reduce charging times in cold weather conditions. In fact, it allows cold-soaked LFP vehicles to get back on the road up to 4 times faster. Moreover, this is the first time such a method has been used to warm a battery, further underscoring Tesla's commitment to innovation.
The new Supercharger feature is intended to enhance the user experience by reducing charging times in extreme cold weather. By preconditioning the battery before arriving at a Supercharger, charging performance is maximized. This is a welcome development for Tesla owners living in cold climates, as it promises a more seamless and efficient charging experience.
