Summer's Polar Picks in July

In the realm of crime fiction, Sweden continues to captivate readers with its dramatic and isolated environments, ideal for intriguing stories. Three renowned Swedish authors, Vera Bergström, Viveca Sten, and Sara Strömberg, have made significant contributions to the genre, but a specific intersection of their works set in the ski resort town of Åre remains elusive.

Viveca Sten, famous for her Sandhamn Murders series set in the Stockholm archipelago, has a new series starting with A Scarf in the Snow set in Åre. However, a joint investigation featuring Bergström, Sten, and Strömberg in Åre does not seem to be a common theme in their works, as per the current public information and literature records.

Meanwhile, Romain Puértolas' novel Hitler in Argentina presents hypotheses about Hitler's survival after his supposed suicide, suggesting that he lived near Bariloche, in Patagonia, Argentina, until 1963. The book is based on a meeting with the woman who claims to have been Hitler's cook. Puértolas' novel also includes himself as a character in the story.

Another chilling tale comes from a small town near the forest of Morkret, where more girls have disappeared, causing panic. The investigation was overwhelming for the local police, with detailed profiles of the main officers provided by Camilla Grebe in her book. In a related development, the body of another teenage girl was found near a river in Storfors, rural Sweden, a year after the disappearance of Ella.

Stockholm dispatched an inspector to assist local investigators in the case of the second teenage girl's death. This is not the first time Swedish authorities have been involved in high-profile cases. Journalist Vera Bergström is currently investigating the (over)development of luxury real estate and a young shepherd's disappearance at the ski resort of Åre.

On a different note, Jacques Forgeas' novel The Ghosts of Versailles traces the invention of modern policing. The book features the lieutenant general of police, La Reynie, as a character. Louis XIV is also concerned about a commissioned painting by artist Vignard in the same novel.

In other news, Xi Jinping asked Donald Trump to change course in their disputes, which extend beyond the trade war. The incident in Michigan saw at least 11 people stabbed outside a Walmart, with six of them in critical condition.

Lastly, Swedish novelist Sara Strömberg has a new book called Slippery Ground, awarded by the Swedish Academy of Crime Fiction. Her reputation continues to grow as her works are translated into more than twenty languages.

As always, stay tuned for more updates on the world of crime fiction and international mysteries.
