Brandenburg Strawberry Picking Faces Challenges Due to Late Frosts

Following severe late frosts in May, strawberry pickers in Brandenburg are advised to check opening hours before visiting, as some farms may experience short-term closures. Several farms have established hotlines and updated their websites with current information.

The late frost has affected the yield in certain regions, causing delays in the harvest. In Potsdam, Neumann's Erntegarten has announced it will not begin self-picking for at least three more weeks due to the impact of the frost.

Berliner Beerengarten closed its gardens in Oranienburg, Schönfließ, Hoppegarten, and Gatow on Wednesday due to a lack of ripe fruits. The company stated it may need to close again if fruit supplies run low.

Pomona Gartenbau company in Ahrensfelde/Elisenau has set up a WhatsApp channel to keep customers informed about the growing conditions and opening hours. Owner Reiner Matthes plans to implement Agri-Photovoltaic systems to protect his fields against future climate risks.

BB Brandenburgische Obst GmbH also advises customers to verify opening hours, as temporary closures may occur to allow fruits to ripen. According to the Garden Building Association Berlin-Brandenburg, the cultivation of strawberries has been declining in recent years, with fewer fruits being harvested, especially in open fields.

Some farms, such as Spargelhof Klaistow (located about 50 km southwest of Berlin), have daily opening hours from 9:00 a.m. to an unspecified closing time. It is noteworthy that the area under strawberry cultivation in Brandenburg has significantly decreased in recent years, with both open-field and protected cultivation areas showing a decline.

Protected cultivation methods like greenhouses and tunnels have achieved higher yields of 122 decitons per hectare compared to open fields, where the average yield is only 49 decitons per hectare.

On June 14-15, 2025, the 30th Brandenburg Country Outing will be held, offering an opportunity to explore the countryside under the motto 'DISCOVER – EXPERIENCE – ENJOY'. This event might include visits to farms and offer insight into the local agricultural scene.

Customers have reported mixed reviews about strawberry quality from certain farms, such as Spargelgut Diedersdorf in Grossbeeren, where some have experienced soft and brown strawberries. However, the overall situation for strawberry picking in Brandenburg is primarily influenced by environmental factors like late frosts rather than quality issues at specific farms.

  1. As a response to the continuous challenges in strawberry picking due to late frosts, many community policies within Brandenburg strawberry farms have updated their communication channels, such as hotlines, websites, and even using platforms like WhatsApp, to keep customers informed about the current status of their farms.
  2. Embracing a sustainability-driven lifestyle, Pomona Gartenbau company in Ahrensfelde/Elisenau is implementing Agri-Photovoltaic systems to protect their fields against future climate risks, recognizing the need for innovation in food-and-drink production to adapt to changing home-and-garden conditions.
