The Mainz Police Presidium has announced a series of events and advisory services aimed at enhancing road safety, particularly for seniors, during the European RoadPOL Safety Days (RSD) from September 16 to 22, 2025. In response to an increase in traffic accidents involving seniors, the Mainz Police is focusing its efforts on raising awareness and implementing targeted measures towards the 'Vision Zero' goal of no traffic fatalities. Notably, the number of accidents involving seniors aged 65 and over increased by 1.7% or 84 accidents to 5,154 in the previous year, marking the highest figure in the last five years. During the RSD, the Mainz Police will be offering advisory services in several locations across the region. In Mainz, these services will be available at Dahlheimer Weg in Mainz-Bretzenheim on September 19, 2025. Seniors can also expect advisory services in Alzey, Worms, Kirchheimbolanden, and Ingelheim during the week. In addition to advisory services, the Mainz Police will be conducting targeted inspections on the roadworthiness of bicycles, e-scooters, and pedelecs. These inspections will take place in Mainz-Bretzenheim, Bad Kreuznach, and possibly Alzey. The inspections will focus on roadworthiness, traffic suitability, and illegal tuning. The city that has seen a significant increase in fatal traffic accidents is Mainz. In the first half of 2025, there were 22 fatal accidents reported, a 144% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The Mainz Police Presidium recorded a total of 23,753 accidents in 2024, a decrease of 317 compared to 2023. However, the number of deaths remained the same as in 2022, with 25 people losing their lives in traffic accidents. In 2023, only 11 people died. The European RoadPOL Safety Days is an initiative aimed at reducing the number of traffic fatalities on Europe's roads to zero, at least for one day a year. The goal of the RSD is to raise awareness of the dangers on the roads among road users. The Mainz Police Presidium participated in the RSD in 2025, and this year's events are expected to be even more impactful. Among the victims in the first half of 2025, 19 were seniors, and 15 of them lost their lives. The Mainz Police urges seniors to take advantage of the advisory services and inspections to ensure their safety on the roads. The RoadPOL Safety Days is an annual event that takes place from September 16 to 22. The Mainz Police encourages everyone to join the efforts in promoting road safety and contributing to the 'Vision Zero' goal.
