Safe Space for Melbourne's Chinese Youth Boosts Belonging
A safe space for young people in Melbourne's Chinese community has been established at Holy Name Anglican Church in Vermont. Funded by the Melbourne Anglican Foundation's youth grants, the initiative provides food and mentoring services at no cost to the young attendees.
Rev. Grace Wang and Ping Luo launched the project to support disconnected youth, many of whom struggled to make friends at school and felt isolated. Some faced anxiety and had learning difficulties, with language gaps further complicating their education. The safe space offers a supportive environment where these young people can build trusted relationships and share their lives.
Initially, the participants were withdrawn, but they have since shown improvement in their demeanor and engagement. The funding allowed the initiative to provide these services free of charge, enabling the youth to come together, share stories, and make social connections.
The safe space at Holy Name Anglican Church has proven beneficial for Melbourne's Chinese youth, fostering a supportive community where they can find belonging and support. Despite the unknown donor of the initial funds, the Melbourne Anglican Foundation's youth grants have made a tangible difference in the lives of these young people.
