Saarlouis Maintains Status as a Fairtrade Town

Saarlouis, a city in Germany, has once again been recognised as a Fairtrade Town, solidifying its commitment to fair production conditions and sustainable consumption. This achievement was announced by Mayor Marc Speicher, who emphasised the city's dedication to fair trade and its importance for both the local community and producers worldwide.

To become and maintain the status of a Fairtrade Town, a community must meet specific criteria. These include a formal commitment from the local council or governing body, the availability of a range of Fairtrade products, active community engagement, regular promotion and awareness-raising activities, and the formation of a steering group or committee to coordinate Fairtrade activities and maintain momentum.

In the case of Saarlouis, the city council made a commitment in 2009 to support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products where possible. To ensure the long-term maintenance of fair trade standards, a steering group was established, consisting of representatives from the city administration, churches, schools, the Catholic Family Education Center, and local businesses. This group coordinates local actions and works tirelessly to promote Fairtrade products and awareness within the community.

Saarlouis has met all five required criteria of the Fairtrade Towns campaign in the current evaluation round. The city's dedication to fair trade is evident in the wide availability of Fairtrade products in local shops, cafes, businesses, and institutions. Moreover, the city's commitment is supported by numerous local groups and organisations, including schools, faith groups, trade unions, and community groups.

The Fairtrade Towns network, which includes countries such as the UK, Sweden, Brazil, and Lebanon, comprises over 2,000 cities in 36 countries worldwide. As a member of this network, Saarlouis stands among other cities committed to fair trade and sustainable consumption.

Mayor Speicher, in his statement, highlighted the personal contribution that every individual and even a small European city can make to fair trade and sustainable consumption. He praised the commitment of many citizens who volunteer for fair trade and take responsibility "for our city and for people worldwide."

The extension of the title keeps Saarlouis among the over 900 Fairtrade Towns in Germany. This achievement is a testament to the city's ongoing support and activity, which includes measurable increases in the sales and visibility of Fairtrade products.
