River and Lahnufer are given a thorough cleanup by dedicate volunteers
In the picturesque city of Marburg, volunteers from various organisations banded together to clean up the Lahn banks and river from litter. The annual "Clean Lahn" initiative saw 60 volunteers and honorary workers collect waste from paths, meadows, and bushes along the banks, while divers and motorboat crews cleared the river and channel of bulky waste.
The German Life Saving Association (DLRG), bsj Marburg, and the Marburg Canoe Association were among the participants in this year's event. The city's service provider organised the action day, which combined efforts with the LahnCleanUp initiative.
The DBM provided collection equipment such as tongs, gloves, and trash bags for the volunteers. A "typical" haul included a bicycle, old tires, a sleeping bag, and shoes. Councilwoman Kirsten Dinnebier expressed her satisfaction about less waste found directly in the river and on the collection routes.
Carelessly discarded waste is a growing problem for cities and the environment, often ending up in rivers and seas. This year, volunteers found less waste compared to previous years, a positive sign that the initiative is making a difference.
The most waste was found around the bridge at Martin Luther School. Councilwoman Dinnebier thanked the volunteers for their hard work and dedication, ensuring that the Lahn remains a clean and beautiful river for all to enjoy. After the action, the DBM took away all waste to weigh and dispose of it properly.
The "Clean Lahn" initiative is an annual action day held to combat littering in public spaces. This year's success highlights the importance of community efforts in preserving the environment and keeping our cities clean.
