Revitalizing an Amaryllis Post-Bloom: Following are Essential Steps for This Stunning Holiday Bloom
The Amaryllis, a popular winter houseplant, is known for its stunning blooms and long lifespan. These plants, often purchased during the holidays, can be made to re-bloom every year with the right care.
Amaryllis plants thrive in warm, sunny locations. A south-facing window is ideal, but they can also be placed on a window sill and treated like other houseplants, receiving water and fertilization as needed. If moved outside, the Amaryllis should be grown in a semi-sunny spot to avoid receiving too much direct sunlight.
During the growing season, the plant should be fertilized regularly to help rejuvenate the bulb. As the plant enters its dormant phase in fall, reduce watering and move it to a cooler location with less light. The Amaryllis leaves will continue to grow, but it won't flower until after its dormant phase.
After two months of dormancy, usually between September and October, move the pot into a warm, sunny location and resume watering to trigger blooming. Start watering the bulb around six to eight weeks before you'd like it to bloom again.
Once the flowers on an Amaryllis have faded, the flowering stalk can be cut off, but the leaves should not be cut. The stalk can be left until it shrivels, as it is photosynthesizing and replenishing the bulb.
If your Amaryllis starts growing offsets, these can be separated and potted up in their own container in the spring. If you choose to leave the offsets on the original bulb, eventually, you will have a large pot full of flowering bulbs.
It's important to note that Amaryllis and Hippeastrum are two different genera in the Amaryllidaceae family. However, the name Amaryllis is still used to refer to the many hybrid Hippeastrum cultivars available for forcing indoors.
Amaryllis bloom once a year, and these are long-lived plants, easily surviving for decades as long as they receive the proper care. They are considered one of the best winter houseplants, providing a beautiful display of flowers during the colder months.
Caring for Amaryllis plants is the same, regardless of the specific species. With the right care and attention, your Amaryllis can continue to bloom year after year, bringing a touch of beauty to your home.
