Revamped Shared Resource Center for Items: "Library of Things" Emerges
Nordhorn Introduces "Library of Things" at City Library
The city of Nordhorn has taken a step towards sustainability with the introduction of a new department at its city library: the "Library of Things." Located on the upper floor of the main branch at Library Square, this innovative concept has been well-received since its launch two weeks ago.
The idea for the Library of Things was proposed by the CDU/FDP group in the cultural committee in March 2024. The city library team exchanged ideas with other libraries in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, including Göttingen and Hannover, to tailor the concept optimally to the needs of Nordhorn.
Unlike traditional libraries, the Library of Things offers users the opportunity to borrow not only media but also everyday and special items. The selection includes tools, toys, technical equipment, educational robotics learning sets for children, game consoles, outdoor games, special equipment like telescopes, night vision binoculars, microscopes, a photo scanner, and a sewing machine. A treasure chest is available for creative birthday games.
The Library of Things aims to promote sustainable living by making the purchase of rarely used items unnecessary. By offering access to tools, technology, and special equipment without the need for purchase, it saves money and protects the environment.
The loan period for items from the Library of Things is one week and can be extended up to twice. The items can be searched in the library's online catalog and inspected in lockable cabinets on the first floor of the main branch.
Library director Martina Kramer sees the Library of Things as a sensible expansion of the library's offer, making it a meeting place and a place where sustainability is lived. Library director Michael Günther is pleased with the selection of items for the Library of Things, ensuring variety and practicality.
Mayor Thomas Berling is pleased with the quick implementation of the Library of Things, considering it a modern addition to the city's educational and cultural facilities. He expressed his satisfaction with the selection of items, saying, "The Library of Things offers over 70 items for loan, ensuring a wide variety for our citizens."
The Library of Things is open to users from the age of 18. Loans from the Library of Things enable uncomplicated access to items that are only rarely needed. With the Library of Things, Nordhorn continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and innovation.
