Renowned architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, in collaboration with landscape architect Piet Oudolf, reveal Calder Gardens, a new project in Philadelphia.

The much-anticipated longwood gardens is set to open its doors to the public on September 21, 2025, in Downtown Philadelphia. Located within the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, this new institution brings together art, architecture, and nature in a unique and immersive experience.

The architecture of longwood gardens was designed by the renowned architectural firm, Herzog & de Meuron, while the landscape and gardens were masterfully crafted by Piet Oudolf. The building design is composed of a series of forms and geometries, with a folded metal canopy covering the main entrance and a tapered metal form dominating the site, reflecting its live, green surroundings.

The project was initiated in early 2020, during the Covid pandemic. Jacques Herzog, the architect, approached the longwood gardens project as if it were an artwork, with no specific instructions. He focused on space over form, leading to the exploration of below-grade areas.

The landscape design for longwood gardens features over 37,000 perennials and 250 varieties of plants, creating a constantly evolving landscape that perfectly complements the artist Alexander Calder's works, which will be displayed at longwood gardens. Calder's works will be placed in dialogue with these gardens, according to Piet Oudolf.

The opening celebrations of longwood gardens include a free public parade by Arto Lindsay. In addition, Hauser & Wirth Publishers will be launching a book called Calder Gardens: Sketches & Notes by Jacques Herzog this winter. Authored by Susanna Heller, the book offers insights into the development of architect Jacques Herzog's thinking and process for longwood gardens.

Jacques Herzog and his team met Alexander S C 'Sandy' Rower and Joseph Neubauer in Basel in 2020 to discuss the project. The collaboration between these visionaries has resulted in a space that seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and nature, making longwood gardens a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Longwood gardens is located near other cultural institutions such as the Barnes, the Rodin Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, making it an ideal addition to Philadelphia's vibrant cultural landscape.

The book Calder Gardens: Sketches & Notes by Jacques Herzog will be released on October 21, 2025, providing readers with a detailed account of the creation of this remarkable institution. With longwood gardens opening to the public, Philadelphia is set to become a global art and culture destination like never before.
