Landshut Continues its Journey Towards Becoming a Child-Friendly City

A workshop held at the Old Barracks in Landshut this week brought together key stakeholders to review progress and prepare for the continuation of the city's action plan towards becoming a "Child-Friendly City." The event was moderated by Cornelia Scharf, the director of the Nuremberg Children's Commission.

Landshut, which has held the title of "Child-Friendly Municipality" since August 2022, has been praised for its success in this endeavour. Dr. Uwe Pfeffer, the leader of the working group responsible for developing the second action plan, expressed his enthusiasm for the ongoing collaboration.

Mayor Alexander Putz, who has been a strong advocate for this initiative, praised the work and commitment of the participants at the workshop. He stated that the "Child-Friendly Municipality Landshut" is a success story and that the "common task now is to consolidate what has been achieved."

The first action plan, implemented over the past three years, has seen the gradual implementation of many of the 19 defined measures. Some of these measures, such as the accompanied museum visits, the establishment of a youth council, neighborhood walks, and active involvement in the redesign of playgrounds, have served as "best practice" examples for other municipalities.

The collected ideas from the workshop have great potential for further implementation, according to Mayor Putz. The future action plan will incorporate numerous ideas that have emerged from within and outside the municipal administration, with a focus on even greater involvement of Landshut's youngest residents.

The city council unanimously voted to extend the seal and launch a further implementation phase in April. A second action plan is necessary for this extension, and it is expected to contain up to 15 measures. The final report of the three-year implementation phase, including an application for extension, is expected at the end of June.

The city council is likely to decide on the second action plan in spring 2026. The new action plan will be developed over the next few weeks and months, with the aim of continuing Landshut's journey towards becoming a truly child-friendly city.
