Refurbished Munich Accommodation: Unveiling the Hidden History of a Previously Elite Hotel

The newly opened Ankerzentrum at Heimeranplatz, formerly the five-star Sheraton Heimeranplatz hotel, has been transformed into a temporary accommodation center for asylum seekers in the United States. The center, spread across eleven floors, houses a total of 328 rooms, ranging in size from 22 to 43 square meters.

Asylum seekers moving into the center will find a decent accommodation, although not particularly comfortable. Meals are provided at the center, meaning asylum seekers cannot cook for themselves. The state government plans for asylum seekers to stay at the center until their asylum procedure is completed.

The center, expected to operate for the next ten years, is a joint effort by various authorities, with Interior Minister Herrmann stating that all actors are working hand in hand to make procedures more efficient. However, critics argue that the central accommodation isolates asylum seekers.

Asylum seekers receive a monthly 'pocket money' of 128 euros on their payment card, with a maximum of 50 euros in cash that can be withdrawn. The Free State will cover a large portion of the costs for the center's operation and renovations, although the specific operating and renovation costs are not detailed in the available information.

The center offers facilities such as classrooms, an office for initial registration, a playroom for children, and a clothing room. The clothing room contains new items such as jeans, sneakers, socks, T-shirts, and more, bought by the Free State. Asylum seekers can purchase these items at discounted prices, with vouchers provided every six months. The voucher amounts are approximately 270 euros for single adults and 327 euros for children.

After three weeks in operation, the center has already accommodated 450 people. Despite requests for comment on the exact amounts for both operations and renovations, the responsible parties have remained silent on the matter. The Ankerzentrum at Heimeranplatz is set to play a significant role in accommodating asylum seekers in the United States in the coming years.
