Red Alert: Introducing the Library of Stuff!

The city of Nordhorn has taken a significant step towards promoting sustainable living with the introduction of a new service called the 'Library of Things.' This innovative concept, located on the upper floor of the main branch at the library square, allows users to borrow everyday and special items, including tools, toys, technical equipment, educational robotics learning sets, game consoles, outdoor games, special equipment like telescopes, night vision binoculars, microscopes, a photo scanner, a sewing machine, and even a treasure chest.

The idea for the Library of Things was proposed by the CDU/FDP group in the cultural committee in March 2024. Michael Günther, the library director, emphasises the importance of a varied and useful selection of items for the Library of Things. The initial selection includes more than 70 items, ranging from tools and toys to technical equipment.

Library director Martina Kramer sees the Library of Things as a sensible expansion of the library's offer, making it a meeting place and a place where sustainability is lived. The service aims to make technology and tools accessible to everyone, reducing the need for individuals to purchase rarely used items. This initiative aligns with the city's commitment to promoting a greener lifestyle.

Mayor Thomas Berling is pleased with the quick implementation of the Library of Things, viewing it as a modern addition to the city's educational and cultural facilities. Enough space was created on the upper floor to set up suitable cabinets and lockers for the Library of Things.

Loans are only possible from the age of 18, and the loan period for Library of Things items is one week, with the option to extend up to twice. All items in the Library of Things can be researched in the library's online catalog and inspected in lockable cabinets on the first floor of the main branch.

Since its launch, the Library of Things has been well received, with many items already borrowed in the first two weeks. The Library of Things is a response to the changing landscape of consumerism, offering physical items for loan in addition to digital media. It is hoped that this service will encourage a more sustainable approach to consumerism in the city of Nordhorn.
