Preparing for the Global Children's Day Celebration
The playgrounds in Wiesbaden, Germany, are undergoing a series of cleaning and maintenance operations to ensure a safe and clean environment for children.
This week, the playground on Brunhildestraße is scheduled for cleaning for the second time, as part of the regular maintenance routine. Every three months, the playground control team conducts an operational inspection according to DIN 1176 to check the functionality of the playground equipment. Small repairs are made immediately during these inspections, such as replacing swing seats, tightening screws, or filing down split wooden beams.
Once a year, a main inspection is carried out on each playground, which includes a thorough check of all foundations and components. Defective components are dismantled and repaired in the Green Office workshop during the main inspection.
In 2025, 995,000 euros are planned for replacements, with some already implemented. The play ship Eleonorenanlage, Alfred-Delp-Straße, and new playground equipment on the Warmer Damm children's playground are among the recent replacements. The tower in the main street and carousel at the Kochbrunnenplatz are also scheduled for replacement.
The city cleaning staff in Wiesbaden find and collect various types of litter on playgrounds, including cigarette butts, glass shards, bottle caps, packaging, syringes, used condoms, and dog poop. A poster by Boubakar Azzaoui, head of the playground cleaning team at ELW, lists "Ziggy King", "Plastic Ghost", "Glitter Scratches", "Smelly Dump", and "Stinky Wauwi" as common types of litter found on playgrounds as part of the "Clean Hessen" campaign to raise awareness about the issue.
Since 2020, the ELW and their colleagues from the Parks Department have been responsible for the cleanliness of Wiesbaden's playgrounds. They work together to ensure children can play in a clean, well-maintained environment with safe equipment throughout the year, not just around World Children's Day.
