Practical Gardening Advice for February

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty as we delve into a bountiful world of gardening, focusing on the activities you can undertake in February to nurture a vibrant garden.

Firstly, it's time to tidy up your garden. Remove congested grasses and perennials to make way for new growths. While you're at it, don't forget to cut leftover ornamental grasses before fresh sprouts appear. To loosen compacted soil, use a shovel or rake.

February is an ideal time to start growing a variety of plants. Broad beans can be started in multi-celled trays under a grow light or in a cold frame if the soil is still cold. For those who prefer to grow from seeds, cosmos can be grown in peat-free compost on a tray or pot.

The recommendation to plant lilies in February doesn't mean you should rush out and plant them right away. Instead, it refers to the ideal time to plant spring-flowering bulbs like lilies when the soil is no longer frozen and conditions are right, allowing the bulbs to then develop and bloom in spring. If you're eager to get lilies growing early, consider placing them in a bright, sunny spot with a heated propagator or grow light.

Geraniums, specifically hardy varieties called cranesbills, can be grown in the garden in both bright, direct sunlight and shady areas. For those who prefer to grow them indoors, kale seeds should be started indoors if the weather is too cold. Once the weather warms up, kale can be planted in February.

When it comes to warm-weather crops, February is suitable for sowing seeds of tomatoes, chilies, eggplants, basil, and broad beans. Tomatoes can be sown at a minimum temperature of 10°C, while chilies require a minimum temperature of 25°C to germinate. Basil is best grown in a sunny spot or a heated propagator.

Lastly, don't forget about the diverse range of flowering plants that can be grown in February. Other than lilies, cosmos, and geraniums, you can also sow seeds of Eucomis, Liatris, Agapanthus, Galtonia, and Japanese anemones. Sweet peas can be grown individually in pots or cardboard tubes and require a heated propagator or grow lights.

Remember, pruning flowering plants can encourage healthy buds to grow. With these tips in mind, you're ready to embark on a gardening adventure this February! Happy planting!
