Century-Old House Transformed with Modern Aesthetics

A century-old house in [location] has undergone a remarkable transformation, blending modern design principles with the charm of its historic architecture. The renovation, led by local architects, has breathed new life into the foyer, living room, kitchen, and patio, creating cohesive, light-filled spaces that exude a timeless elegance.

The heart of the home, the kitchen, now boasts white oak cabinetry and boldly veined marble countertops. A striking feature is the minimalist plaster fireplace, replacing bulky, dated hearths, and serving as a clean, sculptural focal point. The kitchen also features a large, bi-level island with integrated seating, replacing several smaller ones, providing ample space for cooking and entertaining.

The living room, once dark and compartmentalized, now flows seamlessly into the foyer, thanks to the addition of a curving central staircase. The minimalist plaster fireplace, a replacement for a 1990s brick version, stands as a refined, tactile focal point, enhancing the airy feel and visual flow between rooms.

Terrazzo tiles have been added to the herringbone wood floorboards, adding a modern twist. These tiles, with their durable, elegant surface, connect indoor and outdoor areas, blurring the line between them. A steel and cedar trellis tops the brick patio, offering views of the serene landscape.

Doors and windows have been expanded for better views of the idyllic lake. This reorientation of layouts and opening of sightlines lets natural light flood in and highlights the exterior views, making formerly dark or compartmentalized rooms feel open, bright, and connected to the outdoors.

In the dining room, floor-to-ceiling windows overlook an atrium filled with desert plants, creating a tranquil oasis. One bedroom even includes a chic vintage fireplace, adding a touch of nostalgia to the modern design.

This approach to century-old home remodels is typical, where modern materials and design principles honor the original architecture while solving functional issues like poor light, closed layouts, and dated finishes. The result is a home that seamlessly blends the old with the new, creating a comfortable and inviting living space for its inhabitants.
