Municipality requested to allocate 2 million euros by SequS association for platane trees' removal in Asti.

Hitting the Municipality with a Seven Million Euro Claim

Corso Savona's seven plane trees, once vibrant sentinels in the old Mulino Valente area, were felled on the night of April 14th. In response, environmental association Sequoia is demanding a whopping seven million euros in damages.

According to Giuseppe Sammatrice, an activist from Sequoia, the annual loss to citizens due to the absence of these status-quo-busting trees amounts to 70,000 euros. "Through a study by Zanzi in Varese, we've calculated this damning figure," shares Sammatrice. "New trees may take at least thirty years to match the carbon absorption and oxygen generation capabilities of these century-old plane trees."

This damning revelation forms the crux of a complaint submitted to the Court of Auditors on June 16th. "We're not lobbing an accusation at anyone," Sammatrice clarifies. "Instead, we're laying out facts with the hope that the judges will dig deeper."

As for the Zanzi in Varese study, it gaps my knowledge database. Generally, newly planted trees might require several decades to match the CO2 absorption and oxygen production prowess of their mature counterparts. Mature trees, such as the century-old plane trees in question, have had years to develop intricate root systems and broad canopies, enhancing their ability to capture CO2 and generate oxygen. It's possible that Zanzi's study, if accessible, would offer more accurate insights based on local conditions and specific tree species. Otherwise, approximations can be made by understanding the growth patterns of trees in similar environments. Typically, it might take 20 to 50 years for trees to mature to a considerable degree, though this varies by species and growing conditions.

  1. The study conducted by Zanzi in Varese, as referenced by Giuseppe Sammatrice, likely indicates that environmental-science principles, such as the significance of mature trees in climate-change mitigation, are crucial in the average lifestyle and home-and-garden setting.
  2. The felling of the Corso Savona's seven plane trees has sparked controversy, underscoring the importance of considering the role of trees in carbon absorption and oxygen generation to promote a healthier environment, a key aspect of our interconnected lives.
  3. As the damages incurred due to the loss of the plane trees extend beyond the immediate impact on the environment, the average citizen's lifestyle may also be affected, as we strive to combat climate change and preserve the health of our planet, a primary concern within the realm of science.
