Men are crafted by women at the Folk Art Museum
The Museum of Saxon Folk Art of the State Art Collections Dresden is currently presenting an exhibition that sheds light on an often overlooked aspect of Saxon woodcraft: "Women Making Men." Located at Köpckestraße 1, 01097 Dresden, the exhibition focuses on the tiny, mostly wooden carved figurines from the Ore Mountains. Visitors to the Jägerhof can explore the world of female wood sculpture in Saxony, with a time span ranging from the early 20th century to the present. The presentation includes works by the Seiffen artist Auguste Müller and sculptor Friederike Curling-Aust, as well as loans from Grünhainichen, Seiffen, and Olbernhau. The exhibition illustrates that women were involved in the production of angels, miners, and other figures from the beginning, especially in the Ore Mountains. A reconstructed home workshop provides insights into the working methods of the artists in the exhibition. Admission for individuals under 17 is free, while the regular admission price for the exhibition is 5 Euro. For groups of ten or more, the admission price is 4.50 Euro per person. Historical, modern, and contemporary works are on display, showcasing the development of female woodcarving art in Saxony over nearly a century. However, specific artist names are not listed in the available search results. In addition to the exhibition, renovation has begun on the Blütenbrunnen at the Museum of Saxon Folk Art in the Jägerhof Dresden. This fountain, created in 1979 by Eva Peschel, adds to the cultural richness of the museum. Since this year, the craftsmanship from the Ore Mountains has been included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, further highlighting the importance of the region's traditional woodcraft. The exhibition "Women Making Men" is a must-see for anyone interested in the history and evolution of woodcraft in Saxony, offering a unique perspective on the role of women in this traditional art form. The exhibition is open Friday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.
