Lisbon-based Pasteis de Belém, renowned for their delicious pastries, expands with a second location.

In the heart of Lisbon, the iconic Pastéis de Belém has opened a second location, offering visitors a fresh take on its famous custard pastries. The new shop, designed by Viterbro Interior Design, showcases a blend of historical elements and a modern aesthetic, creating a harmonious space that respects tradition while catering to modern needs.

Located at number 68 Rua de Belém, the new location is a stone's throw away from the original shop at numbers 84 to 92. It occupies the former exit to the original shop’s interior courtyard, providing an additional counter for grab-and-go purchases, helping to manage the crowds that the shop has attracted over the years.

The design by Viterbro Interior Design seamlessly merges the classic blue-hued azulejos (traditional Portuguese tiles) with natural wood and mirrors, resulting in a fresh yet respectful update to the original shop's interior. The design team has managed to maintain the iconic tile work and white-and-blue colour palette, while reinterpreting it for the present day with clarity and soul.

Gracinha Viterbo, the designer from Viterbro Interior Design, commented on the collaboration, stating, "We aimed to create a space that felt connected to the original Pastéis de Belém, yet designed for current and future needs."

The new location offers the same taste as the original Pastéis de Belém, a testament to the bakery's commitment to maintaining its traditional recipe. Pastéis de Belém has a history dating back to 1837, making it a must-try for visitors to Lisbon.

This new location marks a precursor to a planned phased renovation of the original 1837 shop, starting in 2026. The aim is to preserve the architectural and emotional essence of the historic space, while introducing functional upgrades and a modern aesthetic language that fits contemporary times. The renovation will ensure continued operation throughout the renovation and respect the brand's legacy.

In conclusion, the new Pastéis de Belém location reflects a harmonious combination of historical azulejos and wood with modern design elements like mirrors, delivering a look that is both timeless and contemporary, bridging the past and present to elevate the visitor experience while safeguarding tradition. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a regular, the new location offers an unforgettable taste of Lisbon's rich history and tradition.
