Nestled in New Mexico's rugged wilderness, Slot Canyon boasts towering canyon walls rising 7.6 to 9.1 meters high. It's the stomping ground for the beloved Slot Canyon hiking trail, a 4km adventure that winds through extraordinary rock formations and secluded desert landscapes.
The proposal to transform the trail and its surrounding area into New Mexico's 36th state park gained traction in the House, passing with ease back in March. The legislators have now sent the bill, which calls for $9 million in initial funding to build infrastructure and manage the park, to the Senate.
The proposed park would encompass 783 acres that are currently part of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. Expected benefits include beefed-up protection for local wildlife and improved access to the picturesque wilderness area.
Senator Jeff Steinborn, who floated the idea in 2023, described Slot Canyon Riverlands as a "magical place." Representative Nathan Small shared similar sentiments: "The creation of Slot Canyon Riverlands State Park does more than protect the lands and wildlife we cherish — it enriches our ability to share the incredible beauty of Southern New Mexico with locals and visitors alike."
If everything goes as planned, the park would welcome two full-time employees and two seasonal workers to promote accessibility and ensure visitors have a safe, enjoyable experience.
