Kuwait Lifts 20-Year Ban on 'Maid Fish' Fishing in Kuwait Bay
In an effort to boost local fish supply and tackle rising prices, Kuwait has lifted a two-decade ban on 'maid fish' fishing in Kuwait Bay. The Director General of the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources has granted exceptional permission for the catch, with strict regulations in place.
The move, made under ministerial directives, allows for a trial run of the fishing at specific locations, in coordination with the Environment Public Authority and the Directorate-General of Coast Guard. Catches are capped at 400 tons per season, with operations limited to daylight hours.
Fishing will be closely supervised by the Marine Control Department to ensure environmental standards are met and marine biodiversity is protected. A total of 50 temporary seasonal permits have been issued, with fishing limited to live mullet using approved mid-range nets.
The decision, the first since November 2000, is expected to stimulate Kuwait's fish market and improve consumer access. However, any violations, such as fishing in prohibited areas or exceeding catch limits, will result in immediate license withdrawal and possible exemption cancellation.
