Improved Road Network for Neu-Isenburg: Long-Term Benefits Achieved
In the heart of Neu-Isenburg, the introduction of bike lanes on Luisen and Ludwig Streets has sparked a significant shift in the city's mobility landscape. However, a comprehensive evaluation conducted in 2023 regarding these bike lanes did not surface in our initial search results, leaving the impact on traffic safety and cycling attractiveness somewhat unclear.
Despite the lack of detailed findings from the 2023 evaluation or related studies, city officials remain optimistic. Mayor Dirk Gene Hagelstein views the evaluation as confirmation of Neu-Isenburg's sustainable traffic policy, while Yvonne Lammersdorf, the city's mobility officer, emphasises the bike lanes' importance in increasing traffic safety.
The bike lanes have been instrumental in encouraging more cycling, as evidenced by a survey of 467 citizens. A notable 17% of respondents reported cycling more frequently due to the bike lanes. Car traffic, on the other hand, has been minimally affected, with an average daily traffic volume of about 420 vehicles.
Structural improvements are planned at crossing points for pedestrians, and radar devices for speed display will be installed for car traffic. These additional measures aim to improve safety and accessibility. One of the measures is to address cyclists using sidewalks on Ludwig Street, a practice that has decreased noticeably due to the bike lanes.
The bike lanes have also contributed to a substantial increase in cycling traffic. According to the evaluation, they have boosted cycling traffic by up to 39%. This trend is seen as a positive step towards promoting an environmentally friendly mode of transport and enhancing the safety and attractiveness of cycling in Neu-Isenburg.
The city is not resting on its laurels and is planning additional measures based on recommendations from Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. Adaptations will be made at the Luisen Street/Garden Street intersection for better traffic flow, and further improvements are in the works to address specific concerns raised in the citizen survey.
Mayor Hagelstein sees the bike lane project as a potential model for sustainable, safer, and environmentally friendly mobility. The bike lanes on Luisen and Ludwig Streets in Neu-Isenburg are now seen as crucial for an environmentally friendly and sustainable traffic policy.
