Birgit Bischoff, who won't be running for city council, was bid farewell by her fellow Green and SPD colleagues at her final committee meeting. Owing to her cross-party, pragmatic work, she'll continue to chair the music school's support association.

News Flash

Martin Müller of Lebenswerke Stuttgart, our esteemed moderator, concluded the first round of the cultural policy guidelines' participation process on a positive note and endorsed continuing the discussion. The guidelines adopted by the city council were evaluated, refined, and supplemented with actionable ideas from cultural stakeholders.

Proposed initiatives include a "guest room" for artists, a spaces catalog, and design management; the city should consider establishing a cultural foundation. Stuttgart's cultural association will drive the quadrology's continued execution and idea implementation. The updated guidelines and a collection of ideas will soon be released for public consumption.

The committee approves the city library's relocation to the former canteen building on the Zanders site. This proposal, initially expanded by the administration at the CDU's request, necessitates a forward-thinking vision for the old building's future use. More details can be found in the council information system.

Various leaders from the city library, Bergisches Museum, Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders, VHS, and Max-Bruch-Music School presented their annual reports to the committee. The leaders' tenure, coupled with organizational growth, garnered praise from committee members and chairwoman Bischoff for improving the "cultural lighthouses." All annual reports can be accessed in the council information system.

Ina Dinter, director of Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders, champions the installation of a coffee machine in the winter garden, proposing a mini-version of the repetitively requested museum café.

Nicole Mrziglod, the new VHS director, promising a plethora of innovative ideas, advocates for community, collaboration, and the implementation of a building café on Buchmühle. She aims to engage younger demographics and shift focus to social pedagogy.

Buried Treasures Await

A missing depot for the city's growing artworks and museum objects remains a pressing concern for cultural institutions. Space in Villa Zanders is insufficient to receive new donations, increasing the risk of moisture damage. Stephan Dekker, the department head responsible for the issue, is actively seeking a suitable building for a joint depot. If no existing building meets the need, they may have to construct a new one.

The SPD suggests temporarily using rooms in the former paper technology test laboratory on the Zanders site as a stopgap measure.

The Max-Bruch Music School, despite a post-implementation drop in enrollment and fee increase, is experiencing renewed growth in the waiting list for individual instruments. Creativity and adaptability are crucial as the now full-time staff must be more responsive to demand. Suggested solutions include offering more group lessons.

The installation of a stair lift in the House of Music was initially dismissed; however, constructing an elevator to ensure barrier-free access is being re-evaluated. While this project is complex, the goal is to make the building accessible to all.

Athletes' Haven

Plans for expanding the stadium area by revitalizing and expanding four publicly accessible sports facilities were unanimously approved by the committee. The budget will fund the conversion of the old ash pitch to a DFB-compliant artificial turf pitch, with environmental remediation slated to commence in November.

Dettlef Rockenberg, chair of the city sports association, welcomed the sports facilities' revival on the stadium area as a catalyst for sports growth. The CDU, however, insists these improvements not be used to replace the lost space at the IGP.

The CDU emphasized its concerns regarding the four Otto-Hahn schools' sports halls closure, as no context was provided by the city administration. A strategy for renovating precarious sports halls throughout the city is necessary.

On the CDU's request, department head Kirschner explained that the schools and clubs were informed of the sports halls' closure due to PCB contamination in the ceiling light condensers. The affected parties are being assessed whether condensers can be replaced or if extensive repairs will be needed. So, no definitive timeline for reopening can be set.

Finally, the remediation of the Katterbach sports field is facing further delays; following a fruitless first tender, a new search for an executing company is underway.
