The study, which surveyed approximately 2,000 individuals aged 14 and over with online access in Germany, found that 26% of respondents wear headphones regularly when streaming videos at home, with an additional 30% doing so occasionally. This trend was unexpected for the study's authors, as the frequent use of headphones when watching videos on the go was not surprising.
Marion Sperlich, head of research market media insights at Burda and responsible for "Screens in Motion", stated that the use of headphones at home was a surprising discovery for the study's authors. She explained that better sound quality through headphones could be one reason for their frequent use during streaming, as well as to avoid disturbing other household members consuming different content.
The study also found that almost half of the people surveyed prefer to watch separately if they can't agree on what to watch. Another potential reason for the frequent use of headphones during streaming, according to the study, is to block out their surroundings and maintain a more focused viewing experience.
The findings from the "Screens in Motion 2025" study also highlighted a decrease in the viewer group for linear TV. Between 2019 and 2024, the linear TV viewer group has shrunk by 18 percentage points, with almost a third of people surveyed watching linear TV less than once a month or not at all. However, 68% of people surveyed still watch linear TV at least once a month, a decrease of 4 percentage points compared to last year.
