Hanukkah festivities taking place in Düsseldorf
In the heart of Düsseldorf, the annual Chanukkah festival was celebrated with a sense of unity and solidarity this year. The six-meter tall menorah, a symbol of the festival, was set up on Schadowstraße, attracting a diverse crowd.
Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller and district mayor Annette Klinke were among the attendees at the ceremony. The event, themed "Stronger together," was a testament to the city's commitment to supporting its Jewish community.
"Jewish life belongs to this city, and everything must be done to ensure the safety and freedom of Jews in their daily lives," declared Mayor Keller during his speech. He also expressed concern about the recent anti-Semitic developments in Düsseldorf.
The celebration, traditionally held publicly in Düsseldorf, was marked by the kindling of the menorah's lights. Rabbi Chaim Barkahn, who led the ceremony, kindled the fifth and sixth lights of the menorah on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev, commemorating a time when Israel suffered under Greek rule.
Aaron Malinsky, cantor of the Jewish community of Düsseldorf, led the traditional songs, while guests lit up the square with their phone lights after the menorah's lights were kindled. Traditional doughnuts and dancing followed the lighting ceremony, adding a festive atmosphere to the event.
A prayer for peace for all peoples was recited at the celebration, emphasising the festival's message of unity and hope. The mayor also spoke about the importance of hope and confidence in the wake of the October 7, 2023 terror attack.
Düsseldorf stands in solidarity and supports its partner city Haifa, as the city celebrates Chanukkah. The miracle of the Chanukkah menorah, the continued burning of the lights for eight days despite the lack of consecrated oil, was a reminder of the resilience and hope that the festival represents.
Despite the lower turnout compared to previous years, the event was a poignant reminder of the importance of celebrating diversity and unity in Düsseldorf. The rabbi called for the immediate release of hostages during the event, highlighting the need for peace and understanding in these challenging times.
Police officers were present at the celebration to ensure the safety of all attendees, ensuring a peaceful and enjoyable event for everyone. As the lights of the menorah continued to burn brightly, the message of unity, hope, and resilience resonated throughout the city.
