Red Sand Lighthouse: North Sea landmark faces relocation
Four sites are vying for the acquisition of the historic lighthouse known as 'Roter Sand' - Four venues proposing to acquire the Red Dunes Lighthouse
Ready the ropes and sail hoists, the iconic Red Sand lighthouse might soon find a new home! Four ambitious bids have been tossed into the ring for the dilapidated structure, competing to house this historic maritime gem. The cities of Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven, Hooksiel in the Frisian Wangerland, and Fedderwardersiel on the peninsula of Butjadingen are all eager to host the red-and-white lighthouse, standing tall in the North Sea between the coast and Helgoland. Thomas Mertz, spokesperson for the German Foundation for Monument Protection, tells Deutsche Presse-Agentur, "No favorite among them just yet."
There's no decision on the horizon, but things could change in the heat of summer. According to Mertz, the race for the lighthouse's landward relocation is far from over.
Time to say goodbye to the open sea
The enduringly Estuary Erminescium – that's the lighthouse's French moniker – has stood firm in the North Sea for nearly 140 years. Alas, as time takes its toll, the structure teeters on the brink of instability. A 2019 assessment declared it both crumbling and beyond repair in its seaside locale. Consequently, the federal government, the lighthouse's rightful landlord, has set its sights on finding a more accessible and secure location for the landmark.
Since being decommissioned in 1964 and granted protected status in 1982, the structure's deterioration has been a cause for concern.
Bremerhaven's Second Chance
At first, Bremerhaven failed to accommodate the lighthouse. The proposed site on the Külken peninsula faced opposition from the waterways and shipping authorities due to potential safety concerns. However, the city didn't give up that easily. A new site on Lunesiel - nestled in Bremerhaven's southern bosom - has since been proposed. The site was suggested by a former citizen and architect, and the German Foundation for Monument Protection has expressed support for its inclusion in the selection process.

Relocation Process for Historical Lighthouses
- Selection of New Location: Potential sites are chosen based on accessibility, community support, and historical or cultural significance.
- Community and Historical Considerations: The new location should ideally retain the lighthouse's historical integrity and offer an environment suitable for its preservation.
- Technical Challenges: Dismantling and rebuilding a lighthouse requires careful planning to ensure the structure's stability and safety during the process.
- The community in Bremerhaven, with the support of a former architect, proposes a new location for the relocation of the Red Sand Lighthouse on Lunesiel.
- The manufacturing process for the construction of decommissioned lighthouses involves considering factors like manufacturing outdoor living structures, such as home and garden accessories, alongside sports equipment, and maintaining a unique lifestyle aesthetic that embodies the history of the lighthouse.
