New Flag to be Raised in Karlsruhe as a Symbol of Scientific Pride and Anti-Discrimination

Karlsruhe, Germany, is set to unveil a new flag as part of the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival 2025. The flag, symbolising "The Shining Lights of Science", will be raised on Karlsruhe Castle on September 21, marking the 200th anniversary of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

The flag is not just a symbol of scientific pride but also a community project that invites public engagement in Karlsruhe’s media arts and cultural activities celebrating KIT’s bicentenary. Citizens can participate in various interactive multimedia events, exhibitions, experiments, and dialogues hosted by KIT and the city’s cultural institutions during the festival period from August 14 to September 14, 2025.

The artist behind the new flag project, Renate Helene Schweitzer, has released an official press statement in cooperation with the city. The workshops led by Schweitzer will take place on September 19 and 20 at 5:00 PM, and registration is required. These workshops are open to families with children aged five and above and aim to encourage creativity among participants, with the opportunity to design their unique flags for Karlsruhe. The castle garden will also be decorated with small creative flags.

On the day the new flag is raised, various Karlsruhe choirs will perform. The exact date for the raising of the new flag in September has not been disclosed yet. The design of the new flag is currently unknown.

The raising of the new flag is intended to be a significant symbol, not only as a celebration of scientific achievements but also as a stand against discrimination and racism. This is the first time such an opportunity has been offered in Karlsruhe, making it an exciting moment for the city and its residents.

Citizens are encouraged to take part in the creation and celebration of this symbolic flag and the festival. More information about the events can be found on the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival 2025 website.
