Financial compensation of over £4,700 granted to West Midlands Repair Cafes for their repairing initiatives.
The Repair Cafe Support Fund, a new initiative by Enfinium, a leading UK energy-from-waste operator, is set to reopen on 1st January 2025 and will run until 31st May 2025. This fund provides annual funding to eligible Repair Cafes, with each café able to apply for funding of up to £1,500 per annum.
The fund is not limited to a specific number of cafes and has already provided support to six repair cafes since its launch in March 2024. The funded cafes include Friends of the Bilbrook Repair Cafe, Harbourne St John's Church Repair Cafe, Roliston Forestry Repair Cafe, and Highley Shropshire Repair Cafe, all located in Sandwell. The fund supports cafes within a 30-mile radius of Enfinium's facilities in Kent, North Wales, West Yorkshire, or the West Midlands.
Karl Smyth, Enfinium's director of external affairs and strategic policy, stated that the company is committed to supporting repair cafe initiatives in the communities they operate. He emphasised that the fund is designed to cover operating costs and launch outreach programs in the local community, encouraging repair and reuse skills.
One such example is Highley Shropshire Repair Cafe's plan to collaborate with a local primary school to teach children repair and reuse skills. This initiative not only promotes sustainability but also equips the next generation with valuable skills.
The Repair Cafe Support Fund is significant in its potential to reduce waste sent to landfill and cut overall CO2 emissions. Previously, maintaining a TV for an extra seven years saved the equivalent of 657kg of CO2. As more repair cafes receive funding, this impact is expected to grow.
It's important to note that the Repair Cafe Support Fund is not an ongoing programme and has a specific end date of 31st May 2025. Cafe owners are encouraged to apply before the May deadline to secure funding for their local initiatives.
